Upside Down Flower Hat - Free Knitting Pattern

This idea came from seeing a knitted hat with a flower on top.  I ended up doing an upside down version of it and used a Lion Brand pattern for an Apple Hat to knit the pink petals and stems.  I used a circular needle for the hat and straight needles for the rest.

How to make the upside down flower hat:

With yellow yarn, cast on 56 (62, 66) sts.
Rows 1-6 Work in St st.
Change to white yarn. Work in St st for 22 (24, 26) rows.

Shape Top
Row 1 (RS) K 1 (1, 0), *k 4, k2tog; rep from * 8 (9, 10) times, end k 1 (1 ,0) – 47 (52, 55) sts.
Rows 2, 4 and 6 Purl.
Row 3 K 1 (1, 0), *k 3, k2tog; rep from * 8 (9, 10) times, end k 1 (1, 0) – 38 (42, 44) sts.
Row 5 K 1 (1, 0), *k 2, k2tog; rep from * 8 (9,10) times, end k 1 (1, 0) – 29 (32, 33) sts.
Row 7 K 1 (0, 1), *k2tog; rep from * 6 (7, 7) times – 15 (16, 17) sts.
Row 8 *P2tog; rep from * 6 (7, 6) times, end p 1 (0, 0), p3tog 0 (0, 1) time – 8 sts.
Row 9 Knit 1 row.
Next Row (WS) With B and double-pointed needles, p2tog across – 4 sts.
Break yarn and pull through all sts.

Petals-Make 5
Cast on 4 sts (leaving 4-5" tail) with pink yarn.
Row 1: (RS) Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), k3 (5sts).
Row 2: Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), p4 (6sts). (At same time, anchor tail thread by knitting/purling it along with 3-4 stitches.)
Row 3: Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), k5 (7sts).
Row 4: Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), p6 (8sts). Cut yarn and leave sts on needle, leaving 4-5" tail.
Stem

With green yarn, work Knitted Cord on these 4 sts until Stem measures 2” [5 cm].
Next Row K2tog twice; turn – 2 sts.
Next Row P2tog – 1 st.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st; pull to tighten.

LEAF – Make 2
With green yarn, cast on 9 sts.
Rows 1, 3 and 5 K 3, k3tog, k 3 – 7 sts.
Rows 2 and 4 Knit into front and back of first st (kfb), k 2, p 1, k 2, knit into front and back of last st – 9 sts.
Row 6 K 3, p 1, k 3.
Row 7 K 2, k3tog, k 2 – 5 sts.
Row 8 K 2, p 1, k 2.
Row 9 K 1, k3tog, k 1 – 3 sts.
Row 10 K 1, p 1, k 1.
Row 11 K3tog – 1 st.

Hi there! So sorry I didn't mention the needle size for you. I used 5.0mm (US8) circular knitting needles, 16 inches in length, for the hat. Happy knitting!

I have a few questions: 1) what type of yarn did you use? 2) the pattern for the petals seems incomplete, from the picture, there seems to beunaccounted rows? 3) When making the stem, are you casting on these four sts to work on? I've been reading the directions over and over, and just can't seem to figure out why my petals don't look as long as yours.
